The Geography Group was launched in September 2018 with Professor emeritus of Geography at Durham University, Gerald Blake,as Convenor. He has stepped down from the lead role, but will still remains highly active in the Group. The number of members has grown from some 50 in the early days to a large 83. A small cadre of helpers are continuing to support the running of the Group which we hope will thrive and expand.
The wishes of the members are paramount in deciding on the monthly programme, to which end, we have open discussions as a regular part of a meeting’s schedule. One slight change will be a re-introduction of basic geography topics over the next few years as an aid to those with little or no formal geographical knowledge. These sessions are starting with series of physical geography topics then moving on to social/human geography. Promise – no tests!
We will conyinue to have outside speakers delivering talks on their specialist subjects. It is expected that our members will also deliver sessions on their pet subjects or on the results of organised research on local geographical topics.
Members can be involved as much or as little as they wish. The priority is to have thoroughly enjoyable sessions whilst gaining insight to geographical matters. Our regular meetings will be enriched by book reviews, current affairs briefings, quizzes, and problem solving (OS map at the ready!). We also expect to run occasional field trips.
One way or another, the Geography Group hopes to reveal some of the amazing insights which a geographical view of the world can offer.
