I’m not sure what caused the most merriment at our recent meeting. Possibly the hammer smashing fennel seeds moment? But reader.… I digress.t reader.… I digress.
Sue hosted what was another splendid and informative evening this month. Her theme was wines under £10 and all were from Sainsburys.
The fizz was an addition to the ones we were actually ‘tasting’. So after laughing at our perceived wisdom in the tasting world of wine we then got down to the serious business of exploring a range of whites and reds.
- Soave Classico 2024 ABV 12% £8.75 - a dry white Italian wine from northeast Italy. Good with risotto, shellfish. Grape Garganega
- Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier 2025 ABV 11% £7.75 a Chilean aromatic white. Drink with white meats, seafoods, salad and chilli. Grape Viognier
- Fronton 2024 ABV 12.5% £8.75 dry crisp rose from SW France near Toulouse. Good with pasta, pizza and bbqs. Grape Negrette
- Gamay (Comte Tolosan) 2024 ABV 12% £9 a fresh and light juicy red wine to drink with pasta, pizza and bbqs Grape Gamay
- Primitivo 2024 ABV 13% £9.25 a rich and complex wine from Puglia. Drink with rich meat dishes, sliced cheeses and charcuterie.
- Carmenere 2024 ABV 13.5% £9 smooth and mellow from Chile drink with red meats and spicy food. Grape Carmenere.
We all rate Sainsburys quite highly for the wines they sell and for the various offers and promotions. Supermarkets do have some remarkably good deals it seems.
The best of the wines was agreed by all to be the Primitivo but none of the wines scored badly. The wines were perfectly paired with some tasty nibbles including home made Parmesan and fennel cheese straws.
So, another excellent evening of wine in good company and with plenty of discussion and good humour. Our next meeting is in August when Julie will be hosting
