October 2026 - Whorlton Bridge and Wycliffe

The October walk actually took place on November 2nd due to the stormy weather at the end of October. We were all glad to have moved the date as it turned out to be a much better autumnal day, with high pressure dominating it was calm and dry with glimpses of the sun.

We assembled outside Whorlton village church which as it was open most of us took the opportunity to have a look inside. We then headed off through the churchyard to walk down to the river through the woods. The trees along the river were a real feature, looking glorious in their autumnal colours.

On reaching the newly built rebuilt Whorlton Bridge, we were able to appreciate the construction in detail. Crossing over the bridge we took the steps down to a stile and then the footpath along the river that leads to Wycliffe. Although the riverbank is fenced off you can still enjoy views of the river, the geology and the delightful colours on the trees.

The footpath goes through the field where the Thorpe Light Railway runs in the summer months. The grandparents amongst us were recommending a visit for young grandchildren.

A few of our walkers were also reminiscing about the long gone Whorlton Lido.

On reaching the village we admired the recently built property on the riverbank and then headed to the historic church of Wycliffe. The church is well worth a visit as it has many interesting features including “Mouseman” pews, Anglo-Saxon stone relics and most helpfully toilets!

We returned to the bridge back along the footpath to complete our figure of eight walk. The second leg on the Whorlton side took us along the Teesdale way down to the river using the stepping stones over Whorlton Beck to the lifebuoy. We then headed up the hillside to take the path back to Whorlton

Next months walk will be on November 23rd (weather permitting).
