The weather forecast wasn’t very promising, however, after a shower on the way to the meeting point, we had a dry afternoon and some sunshine! Five of us set off from near the post office on Galgate.
We made our way to the Roman Way Picnic site and Sculpture Park where we looked at the sculptures and information board before continuing along the path behind the castle with the river to our right.
After passing the 14th century County Bridge we crossed the river by the Green Bridge. We made our way along the overgrown footpath towards the caravan park, looking out for wildflowers and birds.

After following the entrance road of the caravan park uphill we turned left into a field edged with blackberry bushes covered in flowers. Following the path out onto the narrow road leading to Egglestone Abbey, we enjoyed a quiet stroll along here without seeing any traffic, until we came to a gate just past the little pack horse bridge. After going through the gate where we walked along the path by the stream. Climbing up the path to the left towards the cottages at the back of the Abbey we spotted lots of yellow primroses on the side of the hill.
We spent a short time exploring Egglestone Abbey before setting off down the stoney track towards the road and the old mill house.
After crossing Egglestone Abbey bridge we turned immediately left onto the path through the woods by the river. Under the trees it was beautiful with the sun filtering through, and the ground was white with flowering garlic. Continuing through the fields by the river we arrived at the Demesne and from there back to town.
A very enjoyable afternoon.
