June 2026 - A Tribute to Trevor Morse

The meeting in May was tinged with both shock and great sadness at the news of sudden death of Trevor Morse, our long-standing leader of the group.

The u3a Geology Group was in its infancy in 2009 when Trevor joined and then led the group for over 16 years, sharing his knowledge and expertise in a subject he loved.

Trevor was a mature student when he first took up the study of Geology. Brought up in Hartlepool, he followed his father into the local heavy industry and later was employed in the petroleum and then the brewing industries. In a major mid-life change of direction in his 40s, Trevor took up this completely new subject from a basic start. He took a first degree in Geology at Durham University, and this was followed by a PhD with research into the geology of Cyprus. Trevor became a widely respected geologist and was involved in running the Open University Summer School at Durham. At one time he was the Secretary and Treasurer of the prestigious Yorkshire Geological Society and he was also an active member of the OU Geological Society.

A great enthusiast for the subject, Trevor was a wonderful generous teacher both in the regular monthly meetings and on field trips. He was an expert on the geology of the region and particularly of Teesdale.

What we will probably recall most about Trevor was his evident devotion to his wife Lynn and his family. We will long remember his talks about the geology of the places he visited on the cruises with Lynn.

We were most fortunate to have Trevor as the leader of the group for so many years and he will be greatly missed.

Details of the meeting in May will be included in the July Forum magazine.

The next u3a Geology meeting is at The Witham on Monday morning July 27th at 10 am. All are welcome. Please contact the convenor for details.
