In August the gardening group travelled to Sutton Park Hall and Gardens in North Yorkshire.
This was another opportunity for the Historic Houses Members to gain free entry to a house and garden.
Sutton Park are clearly not used to visits from coaches as the entrance and exit to the site were a very tight squeeze, out coach driver showed his expert driving skills as always.
We were lucky to have a very pleasant day weatherwise with dry conditions with sunny intervals and a pleasant temperature.
We were able to walk through the gardens and admire the herbaceous borders and the extensive range of sunflowers in the kitchen garden.
The garden has a deep and well preserved ice house.
The house was built in 1730 by Thomas Atkinson for Philip Harland. It is now the home of Sir Reginald, the 8th Baronet of Sheffield. The house has a collection of 18th century treasures including pictures from Buckingham Palace and an extensive porcelain collection. We were able to book tours of the house with the guides explaining where many of the pieces had come from.
Miss Daisy’s tea rooms had a wonderful selection of snacks, cakes and ice cream and we were able to sit inside or outside.
This was another enjoyable day out for the group.
On Friday 4th September we will visit Thorpe Perrow near Bedale in North Yorkshire.
