May 2026 - Cryptic Competition

Report by Sue Overton

Seven members met for our May session, the final meeting before our summer break.

Lots of laughs as well as groans as we worked as one group through three different cryptic crosswords – one from the Times and two from the Guardian – completing them all in the allotted two hours.

There was a general acknowledgement that we have honed our cruciverbalist skills a lot since we began our sessions and hopefully these improvements will not disappear over the summer months with all the holiday/gardening/childminding replacement activities!

Answers to last month’s clues published in the Forum:-

Clue: Conflict with detective on plan for future (8)

Definition is ‘Conflict’, Solution is DI for detective with word meaning ‘plan for future’, VISION

Answer: DIVISION

Clue: Comic actor James turned away before fondness led to disillusion (12)

Definition is ‘disillusion’. Solution is:- DIS (Sid reversed/turned from Sid James) placed before another word for fondness – ENCHANTED

Answer: DISENCHANTED

I look forward to seeing you all again when we restart sessions on Wednesday 9th September.
